A young couple designs their dream home, right in their parents’ rear yard.
A ground-up ADU complements existing garage space for a multi-generational family, designed to evolve as the family grows.
Limited buildable area required creative planning to accommodate the couple’s wants and needs, including two baths, office space, separate dining room, and custom built-in casework.
The private spaces are located in a low-slung volume facing the shared yard. Nestled just behind, the main volume features dramatic sloped ceilings with clerestories to capture the southern light.
Eventually, the couple and their parents intend to swap houses, so the new ADU needs to serve the needs of the couple now while anticipating the needs of the parents down the line.
